The Sunwolves will begin their second season of Super Rugby at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground in Tokyo on Saturday, with a home game against the reigning Champions from New Zealand, the Hurricanes. The debutants finished 2016 with the wooden spoon, managing just a solitary victory, which came in Tokyo against the other tournament debutants, Los Jaguares from Argentina, who they defeated by 36-28 in Round 9. They did come close to registering a second success three rounds after beating Los Jaguares, when they drew 17-17 with the Stormers from South Africa at their second "home" venue in Singapore.
Saturday will be the first time that the Sunwolves have faced opposition from New Zealand, as their 2016 schedule didn't require them to do so. After suffering a surprise defeat in the Grand Final of 2015, the Hurricanes came back to deservedly claim the title last season, finishing top of the regular season ladder, and going on to ease through all three rounds of the knockout stage of the competition. Away from home in 2016, the Hurricanes won five and lost three of their fixtures. Two of those losses came in the opening two rounds, when they were hammered in Canberra by the Brumbies and then lost more narrowly in Dunedin against the Highlanders.
