The Sunwolves and the Kings face each other at the Singapore National Stadium on Saturday in Round 2 of the 2017 Super Rugby tournament. A fixture that both sides should be targeting to win, after woeful campaigns in 2016. The Sunwolves, who only made their tournament bow last season, opened 2017 with a match against the reigning Champions the Hurricanes at their main home venue in Tokyo. Unfortunately, they were thrashed to the tune of 17-83, conceding 13 tries. A result and a performance that will have done nothing for their confidence after such a difficult debut season last time around.
The Sunwolves recorded just one win throughout the whole of 2016, when they beat Los Jaguares in Tokyo. They did however, put up some of their best performances in Singapore, where they drew 17-17 with the Stormers, and lost narrowly to the Cheetahs 31-32 and the Bulls 27-30. The Southern Kings faced an injury ravaged Jaguares in Round 1 in Port Elizabeth, but still fell to defeat, going down by 26-39. Even that margin could have been greater, as the Kings second try came after the final hooter had sounded. The Kings beat the Sunwolves in 2016, but that game was played in South Africa, and they have only ever won a solitary victory outside of the Republic, when they defeated the Rebels in Melbourne in 2013, a week after drawing in Canberra with the Brumbies.
