Waratahs                          Force
Saturday 25th February 08:45 GMT

The only Australian derby being played in the opening round of the 2017 Super Rugby tournament. sees the Waratahs host the Perth based Force at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney. The Waratahs who were Champions as recently as 2014, failed to make it through to the play-offs last season, finishing with a record of eight wins and seven defeats. Their poor home form handicapping their hopes of a place in the knockout stages, as they lost four of the eight fixtures that they played in Sydney. Two of the home losses in 2016 came in derby fixtures, against the Brumbies and the Rebels. They did however, end a run of three straight defeats to Saturday's opponents, when they thrashed the Force in Perth by 49-13.

The last time that the two sides met in Sydney, in 2015, the visitors were victorious by 25-13. The Force had a disastrous campaign in 2016, ending up in 16th place on the overall ladder, with a mere two wins to their credit. Both of those successes came early in the season in Brisbane against the struggling Reds and in Round 11 against the tournament debutants the Sunwolves in Tokyo. In the other derby matches that they played away from home, the Force were beaten at the Rebels 22-27 and the Brumbies 10-24.

Reigning Super Rugby Champions the Waratahs, begin the defence of their title at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Sunday, against fellow Australian franchise, the Perth based Force. The Waratahs are on a run of nine successive wins in the tournament, having won their last seven regular season fixtures in 2014, to rise from sixth place to top the table, and clinch home advantage through the play-offs. The Force looked for long periods last season, as if they might sneak a play-off position, but three defeats in their last four games, saw them miss out by just two points. Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has named new signing Taqele Naiyaravoro to make his first start for the Champions, having had an impressive pre-season. Another newcomer Sam Lousi is named on the bench. The home side will be led out by Dave Dennis on his return from injury.

The Force who will be starting their tenth year in Super Rugby on Sunday, will be led by Sam Wykes, the ninth player to undertake that role, as Matt Hodgson will be absent until at least week 8 of the campaign with a hamstring injury. The Force will look to their all Wallaby front row of Pek Cowan, Nathan Charles and Tetera Faulkner, to set their foundations to challenge the Champions on their own soil.

Out of the last eight games between the Waratahs and the Western Force, the New South Wales side has won four of the fixtures, including both contests in 2013. The sides have met a total of 11 times, since the West Australian franchise was founded in 2006 to join what was then the Super 14 tournament. The Sydney based Waratahs have won eight of those matches, with one drawn, and two victories to the Force. This weekend's Super Rugby opening fixture for the two sides will take place in Sydney, where the force have a reasonable record, having won two of the five games played there, with another match ending all square in 2007, the first time that the Force visited Sydney. Quite an amazing record, when put against the Force's home record against the Waratahs, of played six and lost six in Perth. The Waratahs backline is packed with attacking threats throughout, and they have named Bernard Foley to begin the game at fly half, with Kurtley Beale at centre and the mercurial Wallaby, Israel Folau, running from fullback. Much though may depend on the ability of new signing, Nick Phipps, to get the ball out speedily to those runners outside him.

Force will almost certainly target the breakdown, where they will attempt to apply sufficient pressure to Phipps, in order to stop him providing quick ball, and providing the time for the Waratahs to spread the ball wide, and stretch the Force defense to breaking point. Phipps will also have the added problem of having to deal with his direct opponent, Alby Mathewson, who has the experience of 109 caps to draw on.
