Although the French Top 14 Orange tournament is only a matter of six weeks old, Saturday brings a vital bottom of the table clash, with Bayonne hosting Lyon at the Stade Jean Dauger. Bayonne who only won promotion to the Top 14 at the end of last season, have found the going tough in the early rounds in the top tier. Although they started the season with a sensational home victory against the giants of Toulon by 28-23, and followed up with a dour 12-12 draw against Castres, they have subsequently fallen to four straight defeats.

Three of those losses have come away from home, but they have failed to collect a solitary point during that sequence, and have collected just six points from six matches. Bayonne find themselves with only Grenoble below them in the table, and that is only as they have a worst points difference. Lyon who were the runaway winners of the Pro D2 last season, have fared only slightly better than Saturday's opponents. They are immediately above Bayonne in the table, but do have a five point advantage. Doubling the buffer between themselves and the relegation zone, even at this early stage of the campaign could be of huge significance in the months to come.

A match of absolutely vital importance to both clubs takes place at the Stade Jean Dauger on Saturday, with Bayonne currently in 13th position in the Top 14 table, facing newly promoted Lyons, who are just three places and two points above them. Successive away defeats to Oyonnax and Brive in the past fortnight have seen Bayonne slip into the relegation zone. Although they did manage to pick up a losing bonus point at Oyonnax, they failed to cross their opponents line in either defeat.

Although they have won five of their seven home fixtures, Bayonne have one of the worse home records of all the clubs in the Top 14 Orange. They will expect to improve on their home record on Saturday, against a club that has played and lost seven matches on the road in the domestic competition. However, the past fortnight has seen Lyon produce two memorable performances that have raised their hopes of avoiding the drop straight back to the second tier of French club rugby. Although both matches were at their own Matmut Stadium, where they have only lost once this season, they have beaten both Clermont and Stade Français, the top two clubs in the table.
