Although both Grenoble and Bayonne already looked doomed to relegation from the French Top 14 Orange tournament, with the regular season only just having passed the half-way stage of the regular season, Brive who host Grenoble on Saturday at the Stade Amedee Domenech Stadium, will be anxious to secure the victory that will almost certainly ensure their own safety from the relegation battle. Brive are currently in 11th position in the table, and have a total of 32 points, from seven wins and a draw in the 15 Top 14 fixtures that they played ahead of this weekend's match.

They have a 14 point buffer between themselves and Grenoble, which should be enough to see them safe, even if they should slip up on Saturday. However, a victory that would open up an 18 or 19 point gap, which alleviate all fears of being dragged into a relegation dogfight. Grenoble's unexpected, but totally deserved victory over Toulouse just before Christmas, had raised Grenoble's hopes that they could drag themselves out of the deep hole into which they had sunk in the Top 14 tournament. However, New Year's Day saw them crushed 3-40 at La Rochelle, and they are now 10 points behind Lyon and away from safety.

Brive and Grenoble meet in Round 23 of the French Top 14 Orange tournament on Saturday at the Stade Amedee Domenech Stadium in Brive. Thanks to Montpellier's success in beating Harlequins in last weekend's European Challenge Cup Final, the club that finished seventh in the Top 14 table, will now be awarded a place in next season's Champions Cup. As a result, Brive's season has had a modicum of life breathed back into it. As they are currently ninth, quite safe from relegation, but nine points outside the play-off places, Brive's season looked effectively over with still three rounds of fixtures to play.

However, they are only six points behind Castres who currently occupy that vital seventh place in the table, a gap that will be difficult to make up, but which is not insurmountable. Saturday's visitors Grenoble on the other hand, do find themselves with nothing tangible to play for over the coming weeks. They are one place, but five points behind Brive, and even victory in all three of their remaining fixtures, would be unlikely to lift them into seventh spot. The club's previous meeting this season was on 20th March in a re-arranged fixture from Round 13, that ended in a 26-22 win to Grenoble, with Brive picking up a consolation losing bonus point.

Brive will be looking to secure a home win on Saturday when they host Grenoble at the Stade Amedee Domenech Stadium in the Top 14 tournament. A win which would help to pull them away from the relegation positions, where they have just a three point cushion between themselves and the thirteenth placed Castres. Grenoble on the other hand, are flying high in sixth place, which would send them into the post-season play-offs if they can hold on to that placing until the end of the regular season. They are however, part of the congested pack of clubs who sit from fourth to eighth, and are covered by just a six point difference.

Both clubs will be pleased to return to domestic action, after the trials and tribulations of their European Challenge Cup experiences. Brive finished bottom of their qualifying Pool with just two losing bonus points from their six matches, while Grenoble fared little better, winning just two of their Pool matches, both of which were against the Italian part-timers of Rovigo. With Grenoble being traditionally bad travellers when they step outside of their Alpine home, Brive will hope inflict the visitors eighth away defeat in nine Top 14 Orange matches this season.
