Brive                          Stade Francais
Saturday 27th August 16:30 GMT

Brive make their first home appearance of the Top 14 season on Saturday, when they welcome Stade Francais to the Stade Amedee Domenech. Handed a tough assignment in the opening round of the tournament, a trip to the Matmut Stadium to face last season's runaway Pro D2 Champions, Lyon, Brive were more than contented to come away with a share of the spoils, following a 15-15 draw. Stade Francais, were Top 14 Orange Champions just two seasons ago, before a disastrous campaign last time round, saw them flirt with relegation, They eventually finished in the position immediately above the relegation zone, although a comfortable 15 points clear of Agen.

For what it is worth at this stage of a new season, a crushing 54-20 success at their own Stade Jean-Bouin against Grenoble, sees Stade sitting at the top of the ladder at the end of Round 1, as the only club to win and grab a bonus point at the same time on the season's opening weekend. Saturday's fixture will be more of a test of Stade's title credentials for the coming season, than the romp against Grenoble, who are notoriously poor travellers when they step outside their Alpine home.

The new Top 14 Orange tournament may be just a week old, but already there is a feel that Brive, one of the great names of French club rugby, will be in for yet another long hard season, battling to avoid the drop into Pro D2. After being promoted back to the Top 14 two seasons ago, they enjoyed a relatively comfortable first year back in the top tier. However, 2014/15 was a different matter altogether, and it was only a bonus point win against Stade Francais on the last day of the season, that allowed them to sneak above Bayonne by a solitary point, and retain their top flight status. By coincidence, they welcome the same opponents to the Stade Amédée-Domenech on Saturday in Round 2 of this season's competition. Brive were blown away in the first half of last week's match against Toulouse, and were trailing by 0-24 at the break. They did show some character in the second half to prevent their opponents scoring again, and did manage a consolation try near to the end.

Stade, the reigning Champions had a comfortable enough opening day win against Top 14 newcomers Pau, the Pro D2 Champions, who were beaten 34-18.

Brive go into their final Top 14 Orange fixture of the season, at home to Stade Francais at the Stade Amedee Domenech, Brive, knowing that a win will secure their survival in the top flight. A win for Stade who are chasing honours at the other end of the table, could mean relegation for the home club. Brive go into the final weekend with a solitary point advantage over Bayonne, who themselves are at home to La Rochelle. of they do lose therefore, they will be anxiously awaiting the result from Bayonne's game, to know whether they will be playing in the Top 14 in 2015/16. Although they have been soundly beaten in their last two games, both have been away from home. Although 19-67 and 12-32 losses to Toulouse and Castres respectively, are hardly the performances to inspire Brive with confidence. They are however, unbeaten at home since September.

Stade are a club in form, and are chasing direct entry to the play-off semi-finals. If they win at the weekend, and either Toukon or Clermont slip up, then the Parisians will secure a top two finish. Last week's victory over Montpellier made absolutely certain of Stade's place in the post-season knockout phase for the first time in six years.
