Castres may occupy fourth position in the Top 14 table, with just eight rounds of the regular season remaining, but they are far from assured of a place in the post-season play-off phase, as they are a part of the congestion that sees just five points covering the clubs between third and seventh. They have won three of their last four Top 14 fixtures, but on Saturday, they have to face the table topping Clermont Auvergne at the Stade Pierre Antoine in Castres. When they travelled to Clermont at the beginning of October, they were beaten 19-29.
After an inconsistent spell in November and December, that saw them beaten in three out of six games in the Top 14 Orange, Clermont have recovered their form, and are unbeaten in their last three Top 14 outings. Last weekend saw them drive another nail into the relegation coffin of bottom club Bayonne, as they swamped them on home soil by 46-27. Clermont have 58 points from their 18 games, the same as second place La Rochelle, and 11 more than their hosts this weekend. Perhaps more relevant to Castres is that they have just a two point advantage over Racing 92, who are seventh and just outside the play-off places.

Clermont Auvergne suffered just one defeat in their opening seven Top 14 fixtures, and were ensconced at the summit of the Top 14 table. However, four defeats in the past six matches has seen them slip down the table. They are now in fourth position, but are only three points ahead of Montpellier who sit just outside the play-off positions. A further loss on Saturday, when they travel to the Stade Pierre Antoine to take on Castres, could see the stuttering juggernaut of French club rugby, slip outside the vital top six in the table.
Castres made a disastrous start to the domestic season, losing five of the first seven matches they played in the tournament. However, they have turned their campaign around since they were crushed by Saturday's opponents in Round 7 at the end of October, by 13-42. Since that defeat , Castres have gone on a run that has produced five wins from the last six fixtures. The only loss coming at La Rochelle by 21-25. The poor start to the campaign means that Castres are still chasing to make up lost ground on the clubs occupying the top positions. However, they are now only three points adrift of the play-off positions, and they will be confident of continuing their fine home form, that has seen them beaten only once in front of their own fans during the current Top 14 season.
