La Rochelle will be more than pleased with their own start to the season, having secured a share of the points against Clermont in Round 1, in a thrilling 30-30 draw. Before they made the difficult journey into the Alps to face Grenoble. A try count of 3-1 in their favour, probably justified victory for the visitors, but the 22-19 margin was much closer than perhaps it should have been, as La Rochelle gave too many opportunities for Jonathan Wisniewski to kick penalties and keep his side in touch.

Castres host La Rochelle in Round 24 of the French Top 14 tournament on Saturday at the Stade Pierre Antoine Stadium. Thanks to Montpellier's victory over Harlequins last weekend in the final of the European Challenge Cup, the club finishing in seventh position in the Top 14 table, will now be awarded a place in next season's Champions Cup. As a result, a number of clubs whose season appeared over, as far as the chase for honours was concerned, suddenly have all to play for.

Castres and La Rochelle being two of those clubs. Castres currently in seventh spot, will still have some ambitions to overhaul Bordeaux-Begles who are three points ahead of them, and claim a place in the post-season play-offs. However, their first priority will be to fight off the challenge of eighth placed La Rochelle, who are one place and four points behind them, going into Saturday's contest, and secure the vital Champions Cup place. The first Top 14 Orange meeting of the clubs this season, took place back on January 2nd at the Stade Marcel-Deflandre. A match that was won by the home side La Rochelle by 25-21. The margin of the result allowing Castres to take a consolation losing point away with them.

An absolutely vital match at the foot of the Top 14 table, takes place at the Stade Pierre Antoine Stadium on Saturday, with La Rochelle who were only promoted at the end of last season, visiting finalists in the past two seasons, Castres. Winners of the title two seasons ago, and narrowly defeated in last season's Grand Final by Toulon, Castres have struggled from the outset in the current campaign, and have flirted with the relegation zone from the opening weekend of the 2014-15 season. They produced one of their better performances of a bitterly difficult and disappointing season last weekend, when they defeated play-off chasing Montpellier by 27-9 at their own Stade Pierre-Antoine. However, La Rochelle kept their noses fractionally in front of Saturday's opponents, with a home win of their own last weekend at the Stade Marcel-Deflandre by 19-15 against Grenoble.

Although La Rochelle go into Saturday's vital clash with a point advantage over Castres, they have lost all seven of their away matches in the Top 14 Orange this season, and have failed to secure a single losing bonus point during those losses. It will require a huge upturn in form on the road, if they are to become the third side to beat Castres in their own stadium this season.
