Losing Top 14 Orange finalists in 2014, the second of back to back Grand Finals in which they appeared, Castres are fighting tooth and nail for a top six finish in the regular season table, and a place in the knockout stages of this season's tournament. It is certainly Castres home form that is keeping them in contention towards the top of the table, having won seven and lost just one of their eight home games to date. The solitary reverse came in Round 3 when La Rochelle were the visitors and won by 26-18. Montpellier have 46 points to their credit and lie in third position, just five points behind the leaders Clermont Auvergne. In a league in which clubs are not noted for the number of away wins that they manage in the course of a season, Montpellier's record of three wins in eight attempts this season, is quite outstanding. Although it must be said that two of those successes came at Grenoble and Bayonne, the bottom two sides in the standings.

Last season saw Castres suffer a massive fall from grace, as a club that had contested the previous two Grand Finals, winning one of those titles, flirted with the relegation zone. While this season they have not been subjected to the same issues at the bottom of the table, they have still to recover sufficiently to challenge towards the upper reaches of the table.

Four wins and five losses so far, and 19 points altogether, leaves Castres in ninth position. They are a comfortable nine points above the relegation positions, but by the same token they are seven points adrift of the play-off places. On Saturday, Montpellier will be travelling to the Stade Pierre Antoine, attempting to become just the second team to beat Castres on their home turf this season, Grenoble being the first. After starting the season as the main challengers to Clermont at the top of the table, Montpellier have slipped up in recent rounds. After Taking Clermont's unbeaten record in Round 6, they suffered successive defeats to Toulouse and Toulon. However, last weekend, they recorded a narrow 25-20 home win against La Rochelle, which has kept them in the top 6 play-off positions, just three points off of top spot.

The astonishing fall from grace of Castres continued last weekend, as they slid to yet another defeat. Although their performance in losing by just 10-19 at Clermont Auvergne, may have provided some cause for optimism that they can climb out of their current predicament. Winners of the title just two seasons ago, and runners up in last season's Grand Final to Toulon, Castres this campaign find themselves propping up the table at the end of Round 13. Sunday may not offer them much respite from their trials and tribulations, as they face the team currently in fifth position in the table, Montpellier at the Stade Pierre Antoine. Last weekend, saw Montpellier end a run of seven straight defeats in all competitions, with a 23-20 victory over the giants of French club rugby, Toulouse.
