Castres and Oyonnax open Round 4 of the Top 14 Orange tournament, when they clash at the Stade Pierre Antoine on Friday Evening. By coincidence, the two clubs come into the game off the back of heavy defeats last weekend against the top two sides in the table.

With every club in the tournament now having won at least one match, Friday's protagonists lead the bunch of nine sides that have won and lost two of their opening three fixtures. It was ill discipline as much as anything, that let Castres down when they travelled to Toulouse in Round 3, where they sank to a 20-37 defeat, but managed to deny their conquerors a try-scoring bonus point. Toby Flood kicked five penalties, and Sébastien Bezy another, accounting for nearly half of the points.

Oyonnax, whose Stade Charles-Mathon ground was such a fortress last season, were thumped by table topping Clermont Auvergne, who maintained their perfect start to the campaign, with a 41-24 success. Friday will provide contrasting styles, with Oyonnax having one of the best attacks, but the worst defence in the tournament, having leaked 11 tries in three games, while Castres 60 points is one of the lowest in the league, but they have only conceded a mere four tries so far.

Castres have contested the last two Top 14 Orange finals winning the title in 2013 before losing to Toulon in 2014. However, the first five rounds of this season's tournament has seen them slump to the bottom of the table, with just one win in five matches.

On Saturday, Castres will welcome Oyonnax to their Stade Pierre Antoine home, as they seek a win to help them climb out of the relegation positions. Oyonnax themselves escaped relegation last season by the skin of their teeth, but currently sit in the heady position for themselves of eighth place on the table. Last week saw Castres sink to their lowest point of an immensely disappointing season to date, when they traveled to face newly promoted La Rochelle, and was crushed by 41-16. Castres might have expected a difficult trip, as their opponents, despite not having picked up a single point away from home, had already beaten Toulouse, another struggling giant on home soil.

Oyonnax defeated Alpine neighbors Grenoble last week by 40-27 at their own Stade Charles Mathon, but like most French teams they struggle when away from familiar surroundings, and they have lost all three games away from home this season, which might just give Castres the chance to get their campaign kick started.
