Clermont Auvergne will defending one of only two remaining unbeaten records in the Top 14 Orange tournament on Saturday, when they welcome Bordeaux Begles to the Stade Marcel Michelin. At the end of Round 4, Clermont Auvergne are in second position, just a couple of points behind the other unbeaten club, La Rochelle, while the visitors from the Atlantic Coast are in seventh position, with a 50% winning record. Clermont, all too often the bridesmaids, both in domestic and European competition, know that topping the regular season table means nothing, if you falter during the knockout phase of the tournament, which is exactly what happened last season, when they went out in the semi-finals.
However, they will be keen to continue their four match undefeated run, as they seek to claim just a second ever Top 14 title, to go with that which they won in 2010, when they defeated USA Perpignan. Bordeaux Begles have only played one previous away game this season, which ended in defeat to Toulouse 17-22. Saturday's trip certainly won't be any easier. Last weekend was Clermont's first home game of the season, as their own pitch was relaid, and it ended in a thumping victory over the reigning Champions Racing 92 by 47-10.

Clermont Auvergne are one of the clubs in the Top 14 Orange tournament, who have managed to buck the trend in the early weeks of the campaign, and to show their true form, despite the demands made on their squad by international calls, as the World Cup in England rapidly approaches. Clermont Auvergne, who welcome the Bordeaux Begles to the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin Stadium on Saturday, top the ladder at the end of week three, with 15 points out of a possible 15, to their credit. The 13 tries that they have scored is the most of any club, while the mere two conceded is the equal best defensive record. Toulouse the only other side with three wins to their credit, are three points adrift, having failed to register a single bonus point.
Although it is early days, Bordeaux Begles who were probably the most exciting team in the competition last season, have managed to cross their opponents line just three times in their three fixtures so far. Bordeaux's only away game this season, ended in defeat at Oyonnax, who put 37 points on the board. It appears unlikely that a club that has displayed such a lack of a cutting edge in the season to date, will be able to halt the progress of the Clermont juggernaut.

Clermont managed to keep their noses in front of their rivals Toulon and Stade Francais at the top of the Top 14 table following their home win at the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin Stadium in Round 18 of the season against Bayonne. The situation remains extremely tight however, as the three sides fight for the top two places at the end of the regular season, which will guarantee them a home tie in the Championship play-off semi-finals. Clermont Auvergne have a single point advantage over the defending champions Toulon, with Stade just a further point back.
Friday Clermont have another home match, against Bordeaux Begles. Although the coastal side are occupying sixth position at present, it will be a major surprise if they can sustain that position by the end of the weekend, as their away record is one of the poorest in the Top 14 Orange, with just one win sitting alongside eight defeats. Clermont's home record is a mirror image, with eight wins and just a single defeat on home soil. With Toulon facing a tricky trip to Lyons, Clermont will hope to open a gap between themselves and the Champions, although Stade will expect to beat Grenoble at the Stade Jean-Bouin to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.
