Clermont Auvergne who lead the French Top 14 Orange table at the end of Round 11, will be looking to extend their home record to six straight victories during the current domestic campaign on Saturday, when they face Lyon at the Stade Marcel Michelin. Clermont's lead at the top of the table was cut last weekend, as they suffered just a second loss of the season. Not having lost since Round 6, when they suffered a narrow 21-23 loss at their great rivals Toulon, the leaders were expected to keep their winning run going last week as they travelled to bottom side Bayonne. However, they were stunned by the home side, who won for the first time in three months, claiming the points 22-14, despite having their Welsh prop Ben Broster red carded just before half-time for a dangerous tip tackle.

Despite that result, Clermont Auvergne still hold on to top spot, but their advantage has been reduced to a mere two points over La Rochelle. Lyon are in tenth position, with 22 points, giving them a nine point buffer over the relegation positions. However, their away form has been dreadful, with five losses in six outings on the road. The only positive result that have achieved was a 22-22 draw at bottom side Bayonne in Round 7.

After their amazing 77 game unbeaten run at the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin came to an end during last seasons play offs to Castres, and then suffering another home defeat in Round 3 of this season's Top 14 Orange tournament against Montpellier, there were many pundits and supporters who wondered if Clermont Auvergne were a spent force. However, after five rounds of this season's competition, Clermont sit proudly at the top of the pile in the Top 14, with four wins, two of which have come away from home, where their hopes normally stumble, from their five fixtures.

Last week saw Clermont recorded their first ever win at Ernest Wallon, when thanks to a second half try from Julien Bardy they defeated struggling giants Toulouse by 13-9. Newly promoted Lyon has been reasonably competitive since their elevation to the Top 14, and has won two of their five games to date. However, they have played three games away from home in the current campaign, and have lost each and every one. After losing on the road to Racing Metro by 28-11, Lyon are faced with an even tougher task this weekend, and may find themselves pushed into the bottom two on the table.
