After the heroics of the last Top 14 Orange season, La Rochelle will be disappointed to find themselves in the bottom two on the table, even at this early stage of the new campaign. On Saturday, they will hope to get their season kick started when they face Brive at the Stade Marcel Deflandre Stadium. A difficult start has seen them face two of the three clubs who have 100% winning records going into Week 3 of the tournament.

An opening round thrashing in front of their own fans by Clermont, the final score being 6-44, was something of a reality check for the men from the Atlantic coast. However, they showed a huge improvement when they travelled to the capital to take on Racing 92 in week 2, and were desperately disappointed not to claim more than a losing bonus point, going down by just 19-20.

Brive whose biggest fight has been for mere survival in recent seasons, were predicted to have a long hard season in front of them, which would almost certainly entail another relegation dog fight. However, they have started the season in decent form, since trailing 0-24 at half time away to Toulouse. They fought back there in the second period, and actually won the second half, losing by 7-24 in the end, before in Week 2 they took the scalp of the reigning Champions, Stade Français by the impressive margin of 22-13.

La Rochelle will hope to build on their stunning win against Top 14 Orange table toppers Clermont Auvergne in the last round of the tournament, when they defeated the heavyweights by 16-12 at their Stade Marcel Deflandre. On Thursday they host Brive in a vital bottom of the table clash. Despite the win against Clermont, La Rochelle are still in the relegation zone, one point above bottom club Castres, and two points behind twelfth placed Bayonne.

Brive have won two out of their last three matches in the tournament to rise to tenth in the table, but both of those wins have come at home, and their form away from home remains their achilles heal, with just a single victory on the road in the Top 14 this season. La Rochelle are in a similar position, with six wins and a draw at home, and just a solitary defeat in front of their own fans, whereas they have lost every one of their away fixtures.

If Brive can buck the trend these two clubs have for failing to win on their travels, they would open a significant gap between themselves and their opponents. The current advantage is five points, though that could be opened up to ten or as seems more likely, closed to one point come the final whistle on Thursday night.
