Sunday 1st January 15:15 GMT

La Rochelle continue to confound all the pundits, who seemingly every week predict that this will be the occasion that they will blow up, and the fairy tale that has been the La Rochelle Top 14 season will finally end. At the end of Round 14, they still sit as high as third position in the tournament's table, level on points with Montpellier, and just five adrift of the table leading Clermont Auvergne. On Sunday, La Rochelle will be confident of extending their recent record in the Top 14 to just one defeat in their last six fixtures, when they play host to relegation threatened Grenoble at the Stade Marcel Deflandre.

In their own stadium, La Rochelle remain unbeaten in the Top 14 Orange this season, winning four and drawing three times. The draws coming against the leaders Clermont, three times recent European Champions Toulon, and the reigning Top 14 Champions Racing 92. Grenoble won in the Top 14 for just the third time this season, last week when they stunned Toulouse in the Alps, deservedly winning by 26-22. That result saw Grenoble leapfrog Bayonne at the bottom of the ladder, giving them a two point advantage over the club that has replaced them at the foot of the table, and leaves them six points behind Lyon and safety.

La Rochelle and Grenoble who meet at the Stade Marcel Deflandre on Saturday are amongst the cluster of club's in the French Top 14 Orange tournament who are currently comfortably clear of the relegation zone, but by the same token are a significant distance behind the post-season play-off positions. Grenoble from the Alps, have won four of their nine matches in the current season, and with three bonus points also to their credit, they have accumulated 19 points, which gives them a nine point advantage over Agen who occupy the final relegation spot. They are however, seven points adrift of Montpellier in sixth position at the end of Round 9. La Rochelle have managed just three wins, while losing six times, but they have accumulated five bonus points, two for try-scoring and three losing bonus points. Their seventeen points places them in eleventh spot.

La Rochelle were thrashed at home by Clermont 6-44 on the opening weekend of the season, but have since won all three of the fixtures that they have played at home, and they will hope to keep that run going on Saturday, that would see them leapfrog their visitors, and put more distance between themselves and the relegation positions.

Newly promoted La Rochelle are just where most pundits predicted that they would be, before the Top 14 Orange season even started, occupying one of the relegation positions at the end of 13 Rounds of competition. With a slight gap between beginning to open between the bottom three in the table, and the rest of the clubs, Sunday's fixture at the Stade Marcel Deflandre between La Rochelle and Grenoble takes on even more importance for the home side, as they seek to avoid being cast adrift. They will have some confidence going into the game, having suffered only one defeat at their own ground in the tournament this season. While their visitors from Grenoble, although sitting in sixth place in the table, have won only once away from their Alpine stronghold.

That victory did come in their last Top 14 away match however, when they defeated Toulouse 25-22 at the Stade Ernest-Wallon. That win was at the end of November however, since when they have been playing European matches, and lost at home 30-43 to Stade Français in the Top 14. La Rochelle's last home game in the Top 14 ended in a 19-19 draw with Bayonne, who are one of the sides sitting just above the relegation dogfight, and who La Rochelle would hope to drag into the battle.
