After winning last season's Pro D2 Championship by a considerable margin, Lyon have found the going a lot tougher in the top tier of French club rugby, the Top 14 Orange. However, they have dug deep enough in their performances to pick up six wins and two draws in their 18 fixtures, which along with the collection of five bonus points, gives them a 10 point advantage over Grenoble who occupy the second relegation position in the table. On Sunday, Lyon entertain play-off chasing Montpellier at the Matmut Stadium in Lyon, seeking a first win in three attempts in the tournament, having lost heavily on the road at PAU and Toulon in their most recent outings.
Montpellier are having some inconsistent results since the beginning of November, winning five and losing four of their last nine Top 14 matches. However, they are still doing enough to sit in third position in the table, but are eight points adrift of the top two, La Rochelle and Clermont Auvergne. However, their away form is threatening their progress into the knockout phase of the competition, as they haven't won on the road since beating Bayonne 21-9 in mid-September. When the two clubs faced each other on 12th November in Montpellier, the home side ran out narrow winners by 25-20.

Bottom of the table Lyon resume their Top 14 campaign at home against Montpellier on Saturday at their own Matmut Stadium, looking for a positive result that might move them away from last place in the tournament. Their last fixture before the two week domestic break, entailed a trip into the Alps to face Grenoble, where they did well to come away with a losing bonus point in a 30-34 defeat. A Montpellier side weakened by international call, meanwhile slipped to a shock home defeat against Brive at the Altrad Stadium by 10-25. A result that saw them slip out of the play-off positions.
Newly promoted Lyon have won four of their five home games in the Top 14 Orange this season, but have yet to secure a single bonus point on home soil, and have recorded the fewest number of points at home of all the clubs in the Top 14 tournament. The visitors on Saturday on the other hand, have one of the best away records in the competition. Two wins and two losing bonus points have given them 10 points on the road, a record only bettered by the top two sides in the table, Toulon and Clermont Auvergne.
