Lyon have found the going tough upon their return to the Top 14 tournament this season, after a campaign that saw them steamroller their rivals in the PRO D2 in the previous campaign. However, thanks to the issues afflicting Grenoble, both on and off the pitch, and Bayonne's inability to step up to the mark, after they were promoted as last season's Pro D2 play-off winners, Lyon have managed to keep themselves reasonably clear of the relegation positions. On Saturday Evening they face the reigning Top 14 Champions, Racing 92, at the Matmut Stadium in Lyon, hoping to gain some revenge for the 16-29 loss that they suffered in Round 2, back in late August.

All five of Lyon's Top 14 Orange victories this season have come on home soil, where they have been beaten just once, by Castres, in the competition this campaign. Racing Metro will arrive in Lyon in ninth place in the table, with 36 points to their credit, leaving them three points behind Castres, and therefore, outside the play-off positions. The 11-17 defeat that Racing suffered at Toulon on New Year's Day, ended a three game unbeaten run for the Champions, that had seen them beat Grenoble and Castres, and secure a draw at high flying La Rochelle.

Lyon who sit just outside the Top 14 relegation zone will be anxious to secure a home victory on Saturday in Round 17 of the Top 14 Orange tournament, when they host big spending Parisians, Racing Metro at the Matmut Stadium. With Brive, Castres and La Rochelle, the clubs immediately around them in the table all playing at home this weekend, defeat could well see them plummet into the danger zone, as they are just three points clear of the dreaded drop zone. In terms of actual results this season in the Top 14, Lyon’s home record is almost exemplary, with seven wins and a defeat in their home fixtures. However, they have failed to secure a single bonus point of any sort at the Matmut Stadium this season, the only club in the Top 14 to boast of that particularly unenviable record.

Racing are in fourth position, come into the game on the back of an outstanding Champions Cup performance last weekend, when they defeated Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens, to seal top spot in their qualifying Pool. Such is the congestion behind the top three in the table, with Racing only four points clear of seventh placed Toulouse, that defeat at the weekend, could see them drop out of the play-off positions.
