Montpellier                          Brive
Sunday 25th September 10:30 GMT

After enjoying such a successful season last time out, when they won the European Challenge Cup, and were close to the top of the Top 14 Orange table for much of the campaign, just falling away at the end, Montpellier made a terrible start to the new season. Successive defeats to Toulouse and at home to Clermont Auvergne, led many to suggest that they were a club in crisis. However, ahead of Sunday's game against Brive at the Stade Yves du Manoir in Montpellier, they have three straight victories to their credit, and have climbed to third in the table. Sunday should be something of a titanic struggle, as Brive are immediately behind their hosts in the table, with the same number of points, but a worst points difference.

Of Montpellier's three straight wins, two have come on the road, something of a rarity in French club rugby, including a comprehensive 32-15 win at Bordeaux-Begles, which is never an easy place to win. When Brive drew an uninspiring game at newly promoted Lyon in Round 1, there was no hint of the success to follow in the early rounds of the tournament. Since then, they enjoyed a stunning win at mighty Toulon 25-21, as well as home wins against Stade Francais and La Rochelle. The latter game finished 29-28, and the result knocked the visitors from the top of the table.

Montpellier are enjoying their best run of the season, having won five successive matches in the French Top 14 Orange, a run of success that has seen them climb to third position in the table, just a single point behind three times European Champions Toulon, who are currently clinging to second position. On Friday, eighth placed Brive, who sneaked home by 23-22 against Castres last weekend, a result that ended a run of five Top 14 matches without a win, are the visitors to the Altrad Stadium.

When Brive were winning six of their first nine games in the competition earlier in the season, there were high hopes at the Stade Amedee Domenech, that the club might make a genuine challenge for a place in the post-season play-offs. However, their poor recent run of results has seen them slip out of contention, and they are now 10 points shy of the vital sixth position. However, with seventh place possibly offering entry to next season's Champions Cup, Brive still have plenty left to play for, as they trail Castres by just two points. The previous meeting between the two clubs this season, back in Round 12 at the beginning of January, ended in a thrilling 19-18 victory for Brive.

Montpellier will be glad to be back on the familiar ground of their own Altrad Stadium on Friday night, when they host Brive in Round 11 of the Top 14 tournament. Last weekend saw Montpellier slip to a 15-21 defeat at newly promoted La Rochelle, though they have still managed to retain a top five position on the table, despite that setback. Their disappointment was compounded by the fact that their opponents picked up three yellow cards during the course of the match, and yet still outscored them by 2 tries to nil, Montpellier only staying in the contest thanks to kicks at goal. Since losing at home on the opening day of the season 16-19 to Racing Métro, Montpellier have won all four games that they have played at home in the Top 14.

Friday's visitors, Brive, produced a vital victory at home against Castres last weekend. Brive's 21-15 home win saw them rise to tenth in the table, although they are only two points above the drop zone, while the defeat for Castres dropped them to the foot of the table. However, with Brive having lost every one of their away games in the Top this season, it is difficult to see them toppling Montpellier this Friday.

On Saturday, September 3rd, the Top 14 Orange Rugby competition will hold a match in the second week of competition for the new season between Montpellier and Brive with Montpellier hosting. They will play at 14:15 local time and 12:15 GMT, and right now Montpellier is recovering from a loss in an away game that gave them 0 points towards the standings, leaving them in 10th place. Brive is a little higher but not much, and they also lost their first game. They have one point so far which puts them in eighth place right above Toulouse in ninth.
