It is difficult to imagine successive seasons offering such a contrast in fortunes, such as that being suffered by Oyonnax in 2015/16, compared to the previous campaign. Last season saw the club from the Alps exceeding all expectations, and finishing high enough in the Top 14 Orange table to claim a place in the Champions Cup, The new campaign has offered nothing but struggles, and almost certain relegation to the PRO D2 second tier of French club rugby.

On Sunday, Oyonnax will host Montpellier at the Stade Charles Mathon, seeking to end a run of five successive defeats, since they beat Stade Francais back in Round 11, a run that has failed to produce even a solitary losing bonus point, and which has left them 12 points from safety going into this weekend's fixtures. Montpellier have won three of their last four Top 14 fixtures, including stunning victories on the road at both Clermont and Toulouse, and find themselves occupying the sixth and final play-off position, with a seven point cushion over the chasing clubs. Victory on Sunday, which would complete a season's double over Oyonnax, having recorded a 35-19 success in Round 1, and would put Montpellier in an extremely strong position to claim a post-season spot.

Oyonnax who escaped relegation from the Top 14 Orange by the skin of their teeth last season, continue to flirt with the relegation positions during the current campaign. After 15 rounds of competition, they are in 11th position on the table, but just a mere point clear of Bayonne who hold the second of the relegation positions. On Saturday they welcome high flying Montpellier to the Stade Charles Mathon for a clash that is important to both clubs for differing reasons, at opposing ends of the table. Montpellier are just outside the play-off positions, lying in seventh place, but just a solitary point behind the team above them, Bordeaux Begles. The last time that Oyonnax were beaten at home in the Top 14, was at the beginning of October, when reigning champions Toulon were the visitors and squeezed hme 21-18.

With a home record of five wins and two defeats, the team from the mountains will need to improve on their home record if they want to once more successfully avoid dropping back into the second tier of French club rugby. Montpellier have an impressive record away from home by French club standards, with two wins to set alongside five defeats. However, it is the sort of record that suggests their challenge for a play-off spot will go right to the wire.
