After successive Challenge Cup defeats to Bath and Cardiff Blues, Pau return to Top 14 action on Saturday, when they hist Toulouse at the Stade du Hameau. Three wins in their opening six fixtures, may have given a false impression of PAU's prospects for the season, given that two of those wins were against financially crippled Grenoble, and newly promoted Bayonne. The two clubs who occupy the bottom two places in the Top 14 table, and whose on pitch performances are keeping PAU out of the relegation zone. Since winning at Grenoble in Round 6 by 39-38, PAU have lost four straight games in all tournaments, including their last two in the Top 14. At home to Bordeaux-Begles and away to Lyon.

Toulouse own position may be somewhat misleading at present, as they are in sixth position in the table, with four wins and four defeats. They have 19 points, which leaves them only three points adrift of second placed Montpellier. They have only played three times away from home in the first eight rounds of the Top 14 Orange, and have lost each of those matches. They were also beaten in Galway by Connacht 21-23 in their opening Champions Cup fixture.

Last seasons PRO D2 Champions, Pau, have not found life easy on their return to the top tier of French club rugby, and on Sunday in Week 4, things will not get any easier. Although Pau won their only previous home match this season, that victory came against Montpellier. Sunday is likely to prove a far more testing time for the home side, as they face the giants of the French club game, Toulouse at the Stade du Hameau. Toulouse, who have more French championships to their name than any other club, have start ed the season with three wins out of three, in stark contrast to last season, when they made an atrocious start and flirted with the relegation zone for a long period.

Although Toulouse have struggled to get across their opponents whitewash in the three games they have played, failing to record a try-scoring bonus point, despite three wins. However, they will be facing a club with the equal worst defence in the league, with 11 tries conceded, and may fancy their chances of improving their attacking statistics. Agen who accompanied Pau into the Top 14 Orange this season, have already been defeated by Toulouse on home ground, and with such a leaky defence, it appears that Pau will go the same way this weekend.
