Having started the season with a sensational victory at the Stade Mayol Stadium, against Toulon, the Parisians of Racing will expect to make it two wins out of two when they host La Rochelle on Saturday at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir. The halcyon days of last season, when they beat the drop comfortable, when they had been tipped by almost everyone to make an instant return to the Pro D2, and when they went on a nine-match unbeaten run, the best in the Top 14 last season, already seem a long distant memory for La Rochelle.

It may be a second consecutive season in the Top 14 Orange since 2002, but starting the campaign in their own Stade Marcel-Deflandre, against a Clermont side shorn of a numerous first choice players by international calls, over 15,000 supporters saw them overwhelmed by 6-44, as the nearly men of French rugby made a strong opening day statement. The margin of the defeat sending La Rochelle to the foot of the table.

With a dominant pack of forwards, and a squad that looks to have enough strength in depth to cope with World Cup international calls, Racing Metro may well be the second side in two weeks to pummel Saturday's opponents.

The visitors on Saturday, who were only promoted to the Top 14 Orange at the end of last season, are in 13th position in the table, and occupying a relegation position, while they have managed just one win in the Challenge Cup, and already assured of being eliminated before the knockout stages of the tournament.

Racing have played six Top 14 matches at home in the current campaign, and have won five of those fixtures. While La Rochelle have the worst away record in the top tier of French rugby, having lost all six games that they have played on the road, and failed to collect a single losing bonus point, and averaging nearly 40 points against them in each of those defeats. Last weekend La Rochelle were given another 40 point thrashing at Exeter Chiefs in the Challenge Cup, while Racing won a hard fought win in Le Mans against the Ospreys.
