Reigning French Top 14 Orange Champions Racing 92, play host to the side that leads the table at the end of Round 2, Toulouse,on Sunday at the Stade Yves du Manoir, in what looks like the outstanding match of Round 3. The last time the two sides met each other, was in last season's barrage, when Racing somehow held on to secure victory 21-16, in the main thanks to six penalties by World Player of the Year, Dan Carter, despite fierce and constant late pressure by the visitors.

Toulouse have had the advantage of two home fixtures to start the new season, but have faced two clubs who are expected to be contesting play-off places at the end of the campaign, Montpellier and Bordeaux-Begles. Despite not being at their best, Toulouse have still recorded two wins, but will have to step up their performance on Sunday, if they want to maintain their 100% winning start. Racing Metro were beaten in the opening game in defence of their title 9-15 at Bordeaux. However, a home game last weekend against newly promoted Lyon, gave the Champions a chance to register a first win of the campaign. They will now look to kick on against Toulouse, and make it two out of two in front of their own fans, and keep pace with the early season leaders.

The first quarter-final of this season's French Top 14 Orange tournament takes place at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, Colombes on Saturday, and will feature Racing Metro against Toulouse. Racing's stunning 40-25 victory at home against Montpellier last weekend, in the final round of the regular season, was not quite enough in the final analysis to lift them into the top two. They finished in fourth spot level with Montpellier on 81 points, and just one point adrift of Toulon who stole into the vital second place.

Toulouse finished the regular season on a high note of their own, with a 53-14 victory in Grenoble, normally such a difficult venue to win at. That success, was a sixth straight victory for the side that has won more French titles than any other club in history, easily their best run of results in the season. The first meeting of the clubs this season, took place in Round 9 at the end of November, won Racing won by 28-13. The return fixture was in Round 21 on the 17th April, when Toulouse gained some revenge for their earlier defeat, winning at home by 14-3. A third loss in four outings at the time for the side fro the outskirts of Paris.

What appears to be the match of the round in the French Top 14 tournament this weekend takes place at the Stade Yves du Manoir, when Racing Metro host Toulouse. The two clubs occupy third and second position respectively in the table after the completion of eight rounds. There may be something of a surreal atmosphere surrounding Saturday's fixture, following the two week break for European competition, during which Paris suffered the terrible terrorists atrocities, which caused a number of high profiles sporting fixtures to be postponed. Racing have won all four of their home matches this season in the Top 14 Orange, their scheduled Champions Cup fixture against the Glasgow Warriors being one of the matches that was postponed due to non-rugby reasons. Toulouse have the most un-French like record on the road in the Top 14. After four matches away from home, they have won two matches, and picked up losing bonus points in the other two games. They were less impressive at Saracens in the Champions Cup, when they were 20 points behind by halftime, and finished by losing 7-32.

Both clubs have recorded six wins from their eight Top 14 matches. However, Racing have managed just 15 tries so far, and have yet to register a single bonus point. While Toulouse have a three point advantage over their hosts, purely as the result of the bonus points they have picked up along the way in the first eight rounds of the tournament.

Toulouse travel to the Stade Yves du Manoir on Saturday already in a position that they have never found themselves before during the reign of Guy Novesb that of having lost three consecutive games. It is almost inconceivable that one of the true giants of European, not just French Top 14 Orange rugby, and four times Heineken Cup champions, should find themselves in this situation. However, that is exactly where the club finds itself ahead of their challenging trip to Paris to face Racing. After successive defeats on the road, Toulouse was beaten 13-9 at the Ernest Wallon by Clermont last week. Quite a surprise given that Clermont had never previously won at the venue, and that they are notoriously poor travelers themselves. A sure sign of how low their confidence and ability to break down the opposition has sunk, was that they chose to let Toby Flood kick a late penalty to earn a losing bonus point, rather than go for a draw at the death.

Racing Metro scored their first bonus point of the season last week, as they defeated newly promoted Lyon 28-11 at the Stade Yves du Manoir. A result that sees them sitting in sixth position in the table at the end of Round 5 in this season's Top 14 tournament.
