No one would have thought at the start of the season, that Stade Francais would be entertaining the Top 14 table toppers in Round 7 of the tournament, when La Rochelle are the visitors on Sunday to the Stade Jean-Bruin in Paris. However, after staging a stunning comeback on the opening weekend of the season, to claim a 30-30 draw at home against Clermont, La Rochelle have gone from strength to strength and continue to amaze their opponents and the rugby public generally, as they head the table with just a single defeat in six fixtures, a 28-29 reverse at Brive in Round 5. In two other away matches during the current campaign, La Rochelle have beaten both Grenoble and Castres.

Beaten only once in the opening four games of the season, Stade have lost their last two Top 14 games, at PAU and Toulouse. That gives them a 100% losing record on the road, and easily accounts for why they are in a lowly eleventh position in the table. At home, the Parisians have been a different proposition, beating Grenoble and Castres, and sharing the points in a 30-30 draw with Clermont. Given their performances in Paris, Stade would appear to be set to present La Rochelle with a mighty challenge on Sunday. However, that has become the norm over recent weeks, and so far the surprise club of the season, have met these challenges head on.

Stade Francais are looking to end a run of three successive Top 14 Orange defeats on Saturday, when they play host to La Rochelle at the Stade Jean Bouin. The reigning Champions indifferent form continues to have them flirting with the relegation zone, They currently have an 11 point buffer between themselves and Agen, which looks a comfortable enough gap, with nine rounds of the regular season remaining, but which could shrink with the bottom two sides, Agen and Oyonnax, facing each other on Saturday.

La Rochelle find themselves in a difficult position, that appears to already leave them with little to play for during the rest of the campaign. They have accumulated 40 points, and are in no danger of being dragged into a relegation battle, but are also eight points behind Toulouse who occupy the sixth and final play-off position. Stade Francais have been beaten in their last two home fixtures. Surprisingly by Grenoble, who took the points with a 33-18 win in Round 16. Last week was even more catastrophic, when they fell 16-34 in the Paris derby to table topping Racing 92. A complete disciplinary breakdown, saw them playing with 12 men at one stage, due to two yellow and one red card.

After being put firmly in their place last weekend at the Altrad Stadium by Montpellier, Stade Francais will be glad to return to the familiar surroundings of their own Stade Jean-Bouin ground this Saturday, when they welcome newly promoted La Rochelle to their Parisian home. Despite slipping to a 23-3 defeat last weekend in a highly forgettable contest against Montpellier, who moved themselves up to third position on the table as a result, Stade retained their own place in the top six, just. The two tries that Stade conceded last week both came when they were down to 14 men, due to yellow cards. Both were shown to front row players, Zak Taulafo and Zurhab Zhvania. The cards were not only costly, but also illustrated the dominance that Montpellier's forwards enjoyed over the Paris club's eight. La Rochelle will have been extremely disappointed by last week's home loss to surprise package Bordeaux-Bègles, who triumphed 29-26 at the Stade Marcel Deflandre, La Rochelle.

The Top 14 Orange newcomers are one of seven clubs bracketed on two wins and four losses from the first six weeks of competition. However, with three heavy away defeats to their name already this season, La Rochelle will not be looking forward to their trip to the Capital, and will almost certainly find themselves flirting with the relegation zone come Saturday evening, and the final whistle against Stade.
