Stade Francais                          Lyon
Saturday 29th October 16:30 GMT

Neither Stade Francais nor Lyon who face each other in Round 9 of the Top 14 Orange tournament at the Stade Jean Bouin in Parison Saturday, have made any real impact on the competition this season. In Lyon's case, newly promoted from the PRO D2 at the end of the last campaign, they will most likely be quite satisfied with their efforts during the early part of the season. Three wins and two draws have brought them a total of 17 points over the course of the first eight fixtures, and places them in tenth position in the table.

It is however, their home form that is keeping their heads above the relegation zone. They currently have a six point buffer between themselves and Grenoble in 13th position. Four away matches in the Top 14 have brought three defeats and just a single draw, 22-22 at bottom club Bayonne in Round 7. For a club with Stade's history, their form this season will be a massive disappointment. They are in ninth position, with the same number of points as Saturday's opponents. Four home games have seen Stade Francais win three and draw once, against their away form that has brought four defeats in four attempts.

Stade Francais made the early running in last season's Top 14 Orange competition before tailing off after Christmas, and eventually finishing in seventh position to just miss out on the knockout phase of the tournament. They then had the massive disappointment of losing to Wasps from the Aviva Premiership, in a two leg play-off for the final Champions Cup place. That they have started this season with a stunning away victory over last season's runner up Castres pours enormous credit on the coaching staff of Gonzalo Quesada and his assistant the former Fijian lock Simon Raiwalui.

Saturday's opponents are a newly promoted side, Lyon, who are back in the top flight after a three year absence. The two sides have already met in a pre-season friendly, which went the way of Lyon by 24-14. Although that result is likely to have little bearing on Saturday's fixture. While Lyon won all three of their pre-season games, they lost their opening Top 14 fixture at Bordeaux by 9-18, and they may find that the gap between the top two divisions is a huge one to cross over, with little likelihood of coming anywhere near last season's total of 112 tries in 30 Pro2 matches.
