Stade Francais                          Oyonnax
Saturday 7th May 13:00 GMT

Probably the most vital of all the French Top 14 Orange fixtures of this weekend, takes place at the Stade Jean Bouin Stadium, when they clubs in twelfth and thirteenth position in the table go head to head, in a game that will go some considerable way to determining who will be relegated to the second tier of club rugby in France for next season. Last season's champions, Stade Français, who have struggled throughout the season, and never looked likely to successfully defend their title, have 32 points, giving them a 10 point buffer over their visitors at the weekend, Oyonnax from the Alps. Agen being a further point behind Oyonnax, and propping up the table.

Even just a week ago, Oyonnax and Agen looked doomed, but both registered victories in Round 22, while Stade were losing in Bordeaux, and both clubs were filled with hope once more, that they could pull off a minor rugby miracle. A win for Stade Francais will all but assure their safety, while a defeat would set the nerves jangling with just three fixtures remaining for the clubs involved in the relegation dogfight. When the sides met earlier in the season in Round 11 on December 27th at the Stade Charles-Mathon, Oyonnax grabbed one of just five wins that they have recorded this season. Easing home by 25-12, after the sides had been locked together at half-time 9-9.

If Stade Francais fail to beat Oyonnax on Saturday at their own Stade Jean Bouin Stadium, it will be probably the biggest shock of the Top 14 to date in the current campaign. The Parisian aristocrats are flying high in second position in the table, sitting between the giants of Clermont Auvergne and Toulon, and making a real challenge for a top two finish, which would see them advance directly to the post-season play-off semi-finals. Stade have played eight home matches in the Top 14 Orange, and have won each and every one of them, gaining a try-scoring bonus point from four of those wins. Only table topping Clermont have gained as many try-scoring bonus points. Stade Francais are the only club in the tournament to still boast a 100% winning record this season.

Oyonnax survived by the skin of their teeth last season, on the final day of the regular season. They will be more than satisfied with their performance during the first half of the current season, which sees them in ninth place, although there is only a five point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone. One win and seven defeats on the road doesn’t suggest that they are likely to make a serious challenge to take Stade’s home record at the weekend.
