Toulon's inconsistent season, continued last weekend with a 5-15 defeat at Brive, a third defeat in their last four Top 14 Orange fixtures. As a result, they are now just about clinging onto a post-season play-off position, standing sixth in the table with 46 points, just one more than the reigning Champions, Racing 92. On Saturday, Toulon play host to bottom of the table Bayonne at the Stade Felix Mayol In Toulon, knowing that they must target a bonus point win against the strugglers to maintain their bid to finish in the top six.
The two clubs first Vet this season on the opening weekend, way back in August, when Bayonne sprung a major surprise, that perhaps gave a hint at what was to come during the rest of the season for their opponents, winning by 28-23. That victory was one of only four that Bayonne have managed in the Top 14 this season, and the 22 points that they have recorded leaves them on the brink of relegation, and a return to the Pro D2 after just a single season back in the top flight. With just seven rounds of the regular season left to play, they are 15 points behind Lyon and safety.

The French clubs return to their domestic Top 14 tournament this coming weekend, after spending the last two weeks engaged in European competition. On Friday, the opening fixture of Round 17 sees the reigning European and Top 14 Champions from Toulon, hosting Bayonne at the Stade Mayol Stadium. Bayonne have struggled all season, both in the Challenge Cup and in the Top 14 Orange. However, their form away from home has been truly woeful, not that they have the worst record on the road in the Top 14 tournament. They have managed to avoid defeat in only one game away from their Stade Jean Dauger home, a draw at newly promoted La Rochelle. Only Castres have scored less than their 116 points away from home.
Toulon who are currently in third position in the table, will be seeking an eighth win in nine home fixtures this season, and to maintain the pressure on Clermont and Stade Français the two clubs just above them in the table. The expected defeat for Bayonne, could see them plunged back into the relegation positions, with three of the four teams below them all playing at home this weekend, and just a four point advantage over Castres who are in thirteenth place.
