A period of almost uninterrupted success over the past five years, has gotten anyone connected to Toulon, used to looking down from the higher reaches of the Top 14 table, and not up. However, an inconsistent start to the new campaign, along with a raft of injuries to key players, has left them sitting in eighth position at the end of Round 5, with just two wins to their credit. On Sunday, they bring Round 6 to a close with a home game at the Stade Felix Mayol against Clermont Auvergne, who have so often in recent seasons, found Toulon to be the stumbling block between themselves and what would have been a fine collection of silverware.
Both of Toulon's wins this season have come away from home, at PAU and more impressively at Toulouse. However, on home soil they have only played one fixture to date, although they were surprisingly defeated by Brive 21-25. Clermont are the only club that is left unbeaten in the Top 14 Orange, and subsequently head the table at the end of Round 5, with a two point advantage over La Rochelle. It has not been all plain sailing however, for Clermont, who have had to settle for draws in two of their five fixtures. After 30-30 draws at La Rochelle and Stade Francais and a narrow win at Montpellier in the opening three rounds of the competition, Clermont have changed up a gear or two in the past fortnight, and enjoyed crushing successes over Racing 92 by 47-10 and Bordeaux Begles 40-16, both wins being at home.

The final match of Round 20 in the French Top 14 Orange Tournament takes place on Sunday at the Stade Felix Mayol in Toulon. It is a clash of the two juggernauts of French club rugby in recent seasons, Toulon and Clermont Auvergne. Toulon, the three times Champions Cup winners, had early season struggles, which saw them lose four of their first seven Top 14 fixtures. However, much of their early season poor for could be out down to the international calls put on them by the World Cup in England, which caused severe disruption to the squad.
They have won six of their last eight Top 14 games, and gradually climbed the table, where they now sit in second position. Sunday's visitors, Clermont, are top of the table, with a five point advantage over Toulon, thanks to a run of six successive victories. Their best run of the season, although they did also open the campaign with an unbeaten five match sequence. When the clubs played each other earlier in the season in Round 9 at the end of November, Toulon pulled off one of the performances of the campaign, winning by 35-9, and outscoring their hosts by 4-0 tries.

The leading two clubs in the French Top 14 Orange tournament come face to face on Saturday, when second place, and reigning Champions, Toulon "host" table topping Clermont Auvergne at the Allianz Riviera, Nice. Clermont currently enjoy a three point advantage over their great rivals, having won eight of their fixtures in the first 11 Rounds of this season's competition, while Toulon have won a game less. Saturday's contest also sees the best attack in the tournament facing the best defence, and should provide for a fascinating match between contrasting styles of play. Toulon have scored 41 tries already this season, 11 more than the next best by Bordeaux, while Clermont have crossed their opponents line 27 times.
Defensively, Clermont have conceded just a fraction over one try per game, with 12 tries against them in 11 games, while Toulon have conceded 18 tries from the same number of matches. The clubs have had a two week break during the Autumn international series, though the vast majority of players from the squad of both sides will have been involved with their national teams. However, with both clubs back to full strength, injuries excepted, this will be the match of the season so far.
