Toulon who have been so successful in recent seasons, both in the Top 14 Orange and the Champions Cup, are seeking a victory on Saturday at the Stade Mayol, Toulon when they play lowly Lyon, that will cement their challenge merely for a top six play-off position. Toulon have struggled to find the consistency of previous campaigns, and going into Round 18 at the weekend, they find themselves in fifth position in the table, eight wins and one draw helping them to a total of 42 points.

Such is the congested nature of the Top 14 table this season, that Toulon are level with both of the sides immediately below them, Toulouse and PAU, with Racing 92 just a further point back. Looking above them, Castres who are in fourth spot, are just a solitary point ahead of Toulon. Toulon have lost their last two Top 14 fixtures, 6-30 at their great rivals Clermont, and most recently at home against La Rochelle 20-23. Lyon continue to look anxiously over their shoulder from their position of 12th in the table. They have 33 points to their credit, which gives them a 10 point buffer over Grenoble who occupy the second relegation spot.

Reigning Top 14 Champions Toulon will be confident of retaining top place in the table, when they return to domestic duty this Saturday, following a two week break for European matches. The visitors to the Stade Mayol this weekend are newly promoted Lyon, who have found the going tough in the Top 14, and are just a point above the relegation zone. Toulon have won five of their six home games in the Top 14 Orange, including a 27-19 against their great rivals at the top of the table, Clermont Auvergne at the Allianz Riviera, Nice, in their last Top 14 fixture before the European break. Lyon have lost all six games away from home in the domestic competition, gaining just two losing bonus points so far this season.

The Champions have had two tough games in the Champions Cup in the past fortnight, which will have kept them sharp for the domestic tournament. They lost at Welford Road against the Leicester Tigers, but redeemed themselves by winning the return match last weekend, and are favourites to qualify from the group in defence of their European crown. Lyon have played Bordeaux in two all French Challenge Cup contests over the past two weeks. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they won the home match, after having lost on their trip to the coastal city.
