Fifth plays third in the French Top 14 tournament on Sunday at the Stade Felix Mayol in Toulon, when the home club go head to head to head with visitors Montpellier. Toulon who have been such a force in both the French domestic and European game over the last five years or so, have been the epitome of inconsistence this season, with alternate losses and wins since the opening weekend of the season. The three victories and fifteen points that they have accumulated, are still enough to sit them in a challenging fifth position in the table, in a season where no side has yet to look a cut above their rivals.

Going into Sunday's fixture, Toulon have only played two home games in the Top 14 this season. In the first, they were surprisingly beaten by Brive 21-25, but last weekend they too the last unbeaten record in the tournament, that of Clermont Auvergne, who they beat in a thrilling encounter by 23-21. Montpellier are the form team of the moment, having won four straight matches, since losing at home to Clermont in Round 2. They are level on points with Clermont and two adrift of the surprise table leaders, La Rochelle.

The second semi-final of the French Top 14 tournament will take place between Toulon and Montpellier at the Roazhon Park in Rennes on Saturday 18th June. Toulon advanced directly to the last four as the result of their second placed finish in the regular season table, where they were just a point clear of Racing 92 and Saturday's opponents Montpellier. Montpellier on the other hand, had to play a quarter final last weekend, where they comfortably overcame Castres, who had ended the season in sixth spot by 28-9.

That result was an 11th victory in the last 13 Top 14 Orange matches played by Montpellier, the two reverses coming in Round 23 at La Rochelle, and on the final day of the regular season at Racing, when they gave up second spot when losing 25-40. Despite an inconsistent season, that saw Toulon surrender their European crown that they had held for the past three seasons, they still claimed second place in the table. If they are at their best on Saturday, they should have too much firepower for the Challenge Cup winners, but if they are not at their very best, their opponents, who beat them as recently as the 29th May 36-21, are more than capable of upsetting the seedings.

The three times European Champions, Toulon, continued their stumbling early season form in the Top 14 Orange tournament last weekend, when they made the trip in the Alps, and were defeated by Grenoble 33-29. A losing bonus point their only consolation as they slipped to a fourth defeat in seven matches. On Saturday, they face Montpellier at the Stade Mayol. The visitors themselves having suffered defeat in Round 7, which dropped them from second to fourth on the ladder. For Montpellier the lost to Toulouse was probably even more difficult to bear than it was for Toulon. The game was played out at the Altrad Stadium in Montpellier, there was not even a bonus point in consolation, and Toulouse jumped above them in the table.

Since losing at home on the opening weekend of the season, Toulon have played twice at home, and posted 45 points against La Rochelle and then 61 points last time out against Oyonnax. Montpellier have bucked the trend of French clubs to struggle away from home, and often produce some insipid perfromances compared to what they display on home soil, and after losing at newly promoted Pau early on, they have won at Bordeaux and Grenoble, both notoriously difficult venues to win at.

Reigning champions Toulon got back to winning ways last weekend, when they produced the form to which we have all become used to seeing over the past couple of years, as the Jonny Wilkinson inspired club ruled Europe as well as the Top 14 tournament. On the very day that Wilkinson rebuffed an approach by the club to return to the playing side, Toulon crushed 14-man Brive, running in eight tries as they posted a 53-13 away victory against 14-man Brive. They may however, find Saturday's visitors to the Stade Mayol, Montpellier, a more challenging opponent than rock bottom Brive, who ably assisted the champions, by an almost complete lack of discipline. Although that came as little surprise as Brive came into the fixture as the least disciplined team in the Top 14 this season.

Montpellier climbed to third place in the table, just a point behind Toulon, after comfortably beating Stade Français 23-3 in what was a highly forgettable clash at Altrad Stadium. Just like their hosts on Saturday. Montpellier were helped considerably by the yellow cards shown to the Parisians front pair of Zak Taulafo and Zurhab Zhvania, as the two tries in the game were scored when Stade were down to 14-men.
