Matthew Rees will wear the armband that signifies the skipper of the Scarlets for the RaboDirect Pro12. The British & Irish Lion will captain the team for the 2011-2012 season. He was originally supposed to captain Wales in the Rugby World Cup this year but because of neck surgery and the fact that he will be out of commission for a few weeks, he will co-captain the team with Garath Maule and Iestyn Thomas. Iestyn Thomas will be the stand in captain while both Rees and Maule finish recovering from injuries, and then Matthew Rees and Maule will take over as co-captains.
According to Rees, it was difficult to accept the fact that he would be out of the Rugby World Cup, an event that only comes once every four years. However, he is also very pleased to have been given the chance to assume the skipper role. He said that the surgery was a success and that he could feel the difference right away, with the pain in his neck going away. He also mentioned that the medial team including the surgeon that had performed the operation were pleased with both how the surgery went and how he was recovering from it.
Head Coach of the Scarlets, Nigel Davies commented that the obvious choice to Captain the team was Matthew Rees, adding that Rees was a true professional and that he leads by example. He also praised the fact that he has a tough attitude, and sets high standards for both himself and those around him. He said that the entire squad of players respected Rees and also talked about some of the positive qualities that the stand-in and co-captain have that will benefit the team. The first game for the Scarlets come on Sunday in Llanelli when they play Aironi.
